Cleaning and Prevention

cleaning-and-prevention-300x206 Cleaning and Prevention | Welland DentistryA healthy mouth is also an important part of a healthy body. Most of us realize that diet and exercise play an important part in keeping us healthy. Oral pain, missing teeth or oral infections can influence the way a person speaks, eats and socializes. Oral disease, like any other disease, needs to be treated.

Steps to Good Oral Health

1. See Dr. Yajaman and our hygienists regularly:

  • Regular checkups and professional cleanings are the best way to prevent problems or to stop small problems from getting worse.

2. Keep your mouth clean:

  • Brush your teeth and tongue at least twice a day with a soft bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss every day.
  • Dr. Yajaman may also recommend that you use a fluoride or antimicrobial mouth rinse to help prevent cavities or gum disease. When choosing oral care products, look for the Canadian Dental Association (CDA), Seal of Recognition.

3. Eat, drink, but be wary:

  • Healthy food is good for your general health and your oral health.
  • Limit how much and how often you consume foods and beverages that contain sugar.
  • Limit your consumption of foods and beverages that are high in acid.

4. Check your mouth regularly:

  • Look for warning signs of tooth decay. The possible warning signs include teeth that are sensitive to hot, cold, sweetness or pressure.

Report any of these warning signs to your dentist.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do I floss every day?
  • Do I brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and follow my dentist’s instructions on how to brush properly?
  • Do I eat a well-balanced diet, including food from all food groups, and limit sweets and sticky foods?
  • Do I have a history of cavities or gum disease?
  • Is my overall health good?

The answers to these questions are all factors that affect your oral health. They will help you and Dr. Yajaman decide how often you need to visit for check-ups.
